Pricey for costume jewelry.<\/p>\n

Sixty dollars.<\/p>\n

But the adjustable mechanism was very cool, and it closed with two satisfying clicks.<\/p>\n

I wanted it and I bought it.<\/p>\n

The more I looked at it, the more I wondered…<\/p>\n

I took it to a New York jeweler.<\/p>\n

“Can you tell me if this is gold?”<\/p>\n

First he checked the stones.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Diamonds and sapphires.<\/p>\n

Then the metal.<\/p>\n

14 karat gold.<\/p>\n

Then, he weighed it.<\/p>\n

Seven thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

Just for the gold.<\/p>\n

He estimated “Vintage, diamonds and sapphires. Approximately fifteen thousand dollars.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I looked it up.<\/p>\n

It is made of something called “Tubogas”.<\/p>\n

Invented by Italians, Tubogas is a thick ovoid flexible linkage which resembles… gas tubes.<\/p>\n

I found a matching single strand necklace on 1st. dibs.<\/p>\n

Van Cleef & Arpels. France. 1940’s.<\/p>\n

Eleven thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

2 1\/2 inches in diameter by 15\/16 thick<\/p>\n
